Demand Response in Ontario; Ziphany`s Solution to Enable Aggregators

Released on: March 11, 2008, 12:06 pm

Press Release Author: Dave Carswell

Industry: Energy

Press Release Summary: As Ontario rolls out its anticipated DR3 program, 11
companies have submitted demand response applications to the Ontario Power
Authority. Ziphany’s DR platform will provide comprehensive task execution enabling
aggregators to sell load contracts.

Press Release Body: Ziphany announces that its Demand Response Platform (ZDRP) is
being adapted to Ontario’s DR3 program and is set for implementation May 1, 2008.
ZDRP is a comprehensive solution for demand response (DR) providers, which deals
with the varying rules of each ISO/RTO/utility and executes time-consuming DR tasks,
such as baseline calculations, meter data management, notifications, performance and
settlement calculations, and reporting to the appropriate ISO.

Many in the demand response community are excited about the compensation associated
with the availability-based DR3 program. However, all aggregators involved are
required to contract a minimum of 25 MW, which is a substantial load. Though the
OPA is permitting a ramp-up period for aggregators in order to reach the minimum
load, securing that many MW will still be a challenge for many. As a result,
Ziphany is modifying its DR solution in order to facilitate the growth of demand
response providers in Ontario. “When a new program emerges in a market, we add the
CBL functionality and pieces necessary, enabling our customers for quick entrance,”
said company CEO Brian Palka. “We’ve received enormous interest about ZDRP for
Ontario, which is due to a number of factors, but is primarily a result of
aggregators realizing their need to focus on selling in order to meet the OPA
minimum capability.”

Ziphany will continue to work closely with the OPA, as company developers adapt ZDRP
for the new market rules and regulations. Ziphany CTO, Vince LaFratta said, “As a
service to both our existing and future customers, it’s our goal to help our [demand
response providing] partners to freely and quickly move into new markets. We see
ourselves as a catalyst for the continued success of demand response, as our
solution grows alongside the emergence of viable DR programs.”
