Compelling Legal Thriller from Kunati Probes the Psyche of a Woman Who Kills Her Child

Released on: May 15, 2008, 12:45 am

Press Release Author: Derek Armstrong

Industry: Entertainment

Press Release Summary: The tragic story of a mentally ill Texas woman who drowned
her five children in the bathtub.

Press Release Body: LARGO, FL, May 15, 2008 -- Janeology, the new Kunati novel by
Karen Harrington, was inspired by the tragic story of a mentally ill Texas woman who
drowned her five children in the bathtub. Harrington, a Texan, takes up the
horrifying question of how a mother could be driven to kill her own child. Of equal
importance is the question, why didn’t someone—the husband in Jane’s case—“know”
what she was capable of and stop her? The American Library Association\'s Booklist
Magazine describes Janeology as \"Beautifully written, compellingly crafted ...
brilliant characters.”

Jane’s husband is charged with “failure to protect” when she is committed to a
mental health facility. If found guilty, he will spend years in prison for his
wife’s crime. To defend him, his lawyer prepares a defence of bad genealogy: the
premise is that women like Jane are predisposed to fail as mothers because they have
inherited poor parenting skills from their own mothers and fathers. To build his
case, he reveals that generations of Jane’s family, from her own parents and their
parents before them, to her great grandparents, endured neglect and abuse and passed
the bad parenting down to Jane.

“We’ve all read the stories in the news about parents who kill their children and
we’ve all asked, how could they do it? Why didn’t someone prevent this tragedy?”
said Kunati publisher Derek Armstrong. “Karen Harrington takes on these questions in
a most original and fascinating way. Part legal thriller, part character study and
part historical fiction, it’s a gripping story straight out of today’s headlines.”

Janeology will release to extensive publicity in April of 2008 from Kunati Books,
called a “new publisher to watch” by Booklist Magazine.

Kunati seeks out provocative and controversial fiction, as well as non-fiction that
inspires and enlightens. The spring 2008 season includes a satire of the US military
by a retired Navy Commander, two new medical thrillers, an inspiring story of a
woman battling cancer and terrorized by a murderer, a unique literary crime novel, a
techno-thriller that’s been compared to the work of Phillip K. Dick, and an
intelligent thriller about the search for the tomb of Jesus.
